I’ve shifted my perspective on this a little bit over the years. I don’t really like the “your paper needs to tell a story” phrasing I used to hear in grad school. No, it needs to test a worthwhile hypothesis or describe a key public health problem, sure, but not “tell a story”

From what I’ve seen, that has encouraged students and faculty to write in flowery prose that can be hard to follow & often sacrifices technical accuracy. Sometimes it’s best to just state your results.
