But in this instance, Medicare works in precisely the same way. I have in fact had this same argument with libertarians who want to get rid of Medicare for almost the exact same reason

I don't mind Medicare working this way because it's a not for profit public system - in fact I love it. I don't want PHI to do this because it means I'm double-paying, and that PHI CEO's are enjoying the benefits (while also lobbying to defund medicare).

But it's simply a factor of any health insurance system, unless you want PHIs to be able to discriminate on the basis of age which I personally find abhorrent

I think I've explained more than enough times that I agree with you on the ethics of not exploiting people but when it comes to PHI the system is purely a means to strip extra money from the young who cant afford it and push it to wealthier older Australians who can.

I just think it's silly to argue against one of the few things that's actually good about our PHI system. If we allowed age discrimination, which would prevent this inequity, PHI would get infinitely worse

I'm not looking for ways to fix PHI. That wasn't my aim. I want it to become politically un-viable because it is a dreadful policy that has stripped billions out of public hands and dropped them into private. This isn't the US - most Aussies HATE PHI.

So, just to check, you're fine with making PHI an inherently unfair system because that might make it so politically unviable that it gets canned? Seems like both a long bow and a big chance

Nothing else has worked yet.

And you're not worried at the possibility that this will just create a more unfair PHI system? Because pragmatically, I'd be very surprised if we ever did away with PHI altogether in Aus

I'm not going to say no to a drastic revamp of PHI. I just don't think it's going to happen because it will upset the older voting base because it will affect them disproportionately.

Yeh but that's again a function of an effective health insurance system. Making it unfair would perhaps make it easier to dismantle, but would also screw over a lot of vulnerable older people
