Yes, obesity is associated with many forms of cancer. But as a causal factor, it's generally smoking that is directly linked to cancer more often, as far as I'm aware

In the US, I think obesity and smoking are roughly equal in terms of PAR. But that’s only b/c smoking rates have declined significantly in the past few decades and obesity rates just continue to climb.

I think for all-cause mortality you'd be right, but as far as I'm aware for cancer-specific mortality and all cancer risk, smoking still has the edge! But yes, the main point around smoking rates and obesity is absolutely right. It's very depressing
