Haven"t read the article but... isn't the reason the different public that is reached? Social media tend to turn viral but not formally cite.

Academics being academics, need a metric for everything. This is just highlighting that you may not get the one you want - cites - just because you get more reads. At least, that's how I read it.

I think that's a very fair way to read it. For example, I'm followed by a wide variety of people on Twitter, but only a small fraction of them are interested in integrated care for diabetes. Not surprising that lots more views doesn't always = more cites
