Also worth noting that it is ENTIRELY UNCONTROVERSIAL to say that spending ~$4,000 a year per person on an integrated diet/exercise/medical program is extremely effective at controlling diabetes Virta did nothing that others have not already done without low-carb dietshttps://twitter.com/EAllen0417/status/1011706268874989568 …

Virta studies would be expected to have the same scientific merit that any observational study of a single practice with a financial interest in the outcome should carry. Very little.

The first studies of "diabetes remission" were published well over a decade ago, and none of them used low-carb methodologies But that doesn't fit the narrative, so it's ignored

Did any of them achieve 60% remission rate with a lot less meds and a +80% adherence rate over one year (or better, because that's something so trivial)? That sounds awesome, please let's see all those studies!

Some had a 60% remission rate, depends on the methodology. The DIRECT trial had a much cheaper, less intensive intervention with 50% remission and similar adherence I'll find the link

“Much cheaper” Did the cost analysis include wages of staff, opp cost of person attending, food eaten?

Oh absolutely. Part of the high cost of Virta is the physician involvement, the DIRECT trial used nurses and/or dietitians

But where’s the analysis to claim “much cheaper” Much cheaper for whom?

To the health system. To be fair, the "much cheaper" comment comes from the manager of the obesity service where I work, I haven't seen the costs of the DIRECT trial compared directly with the $4,000USD a year cost of Virta

Ok gid, that’s not “being fair”, that’s “throwing your boss under a bus while perpetuating a statement that may or may not be true”. If you do come across a comparative cost analysis please post bc “cost” is oft a forgotten layer of decision making

Brief calculation: 1-year supply of VLED diet replacement (bulk buy): $2,000AUD Cost per patient, dietitian support: $500AUD Total cost: ~$2,500AUD Cost per patient of Virta: $5,500AUD

Honestly, most interventions are cheaper than virta, they are a private company it's not surprising they charge a lot
