That's exactly what triggered the thread - a @UQ_News workshop. I think I even spoke at one a bunch of years back

Have been trying to show my students that Twitter is a good thing, but uptake is low.

Any feedback on why?

They are shy, assume Twitter is all trolls and yelling, and worry about damages to rep. They have been over-cautioned about the negs is social media. Other profs say stay off. I want them to learn smart social media.

Figured. They're not wrong about trolls and bias and call-outs and bigotry and hate here. But same in RL! Need to build a safe space. An educational silo. Block everyone else. What platform(s) do they use? FB is the biggest overall in Aus. But Twitter bigger among scientists

Lurked for a long time though, and learned from the masters

That's v. cool to know! Thx. Another good thing about being here is that it is sometimes very positive. I have learned so much here (got into emerging viruses & writing here) sometimes the hard way of course, not unlike RL. Usually from other experts. And still learning.

I think it's great. I've largely replaced email ToCs (and PROMED) with Twitter. Made some great connections. Probably need to work on moderating some of my ranty politicking a bit though. Come for the antimicrobial stewardship, stay for the Mass Effect memes!

Yes, listening to the workshop yesterday I am began to wonder if I should divorce my nascent interest in things socially just, from this (virus) facet of my public face. But I come back to: scientists need to be seen as human 'cause we iz. Still thinking.

I agree with Ian. I'm happy to advocate for things I run are important. But try to stay clear of state politics. Also being w Future Wise gives me a convenient 'out'

For me the politics bleeds into what I do so much that it's tough to separate sometimes. Never going to make a dent in diabetes rates without good policy!
