Achieving remission in type 2 diabetes-15kg weightloss results in amazing outcomes! #nswdf18pic.twitter.com/qD5TbCHZF3
cool! primary outcome was Hba1c <6.5. But didn't show if these people had completely normal OGTT after weight loss. Don't get me wrong - amazing result, but I wonder remission simply means brilliantly controlled diabetes, rather than elimination of the diisease process.
Yeh it's interesting. Most of the endos I work with aren't fond of GTT and would definitely count HbA1c<6.5 as remission-if the diabetes is well controlled enough to confer a reduction in risk similar to people who don't have diabetes at all, is that remission?
That's the only definition of remission that matters!!!
It would be interesting to do a long-term follow up of these remission patients to see if that is indeed the case!
I think a pontential hurdle will be how long these patients, teetering on the edge of insulin resistence/diabetes can maintain the 15kg weight loss.
There are ways to maximise chance of keeping weight off I think it’s worth consider specialised obesity care approach
Absolutely! We are implementing such an approach at Blacktown hospital with our obesity clinic. But it wasn't really the purpose of #nswdf18 so there wasn't as much discussion on the day
