Also worth noting that my wife confirms perfectly to this pattern-she's taken exactly 4 days of sick leave in the last 3 years (!) of her surgical residency

I have taken a total 8 sick days in 33 years medical practice. Junior & Senior medical.

Important to note the burden of caring for aged parents and young children as part of that sick leave. I bet nurses/allied health do more carers leave for their families than doctors

It is very sad that workers can not (or feel they can not) take sick time when they need it. It is better for everyone when staff is healthy.
