One of the myths about gun control that always annoys me is that there are discrete categories of "good guys" and "bad guys"pic.twitter.com/Y7kqXz8kj7
It's a weird statement when you think about it - what defines "good" and what defines "bad"?
Some people use criminal convictions, but we know that criminality doesn't necessarily predict gun violence
Whereas many people who are "good" guys will go on to eventually murder using firearms
Some people blame #Mentalhealth, but as I've written the evidence is simply not there that mental health issues cause gun violence https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/may/29/its-monstrously-wrong-to-blame-mental-health-for-school-shootings …
Oddly enough, one of the few things that DOES predict gun violence - previous domestic violence - is usually ignored by gun proponents
You rarely see conservative politicians standing up and saying that we need better control over DV offenders, even though this is a very evidence-based strategy to reduce gun violence and violence against womenpic.twitter.com/Vkg8ZObBab
So, we could perhaps say that DV offenders are "bad" people But aside from that? It's a problematic category
Most people are "good" until they shoot someone. The idea that you can put guns in only "good" people's hands clearly nonsense
What we CAN do - what Australia, the UK, and most other OECD nations have done - is keep guns out of virtually EVERYONE's hands
This doesn't stop the die-hard criminals from getting firearms, perhaps. But they make up a tiny fraction of the total population of people who commit firearm offences
So, for example, in Australia your average domestic abuser can't go down to the store, pick up a Glock, and go and shoot his partner
And even the die-hard criminals have trouble getting GOOD weapons Raids on criminal stashes in Australia regularly turn up unregistered weapons...that are >50 years old!pic.twitter.com/MTrkmTez8p
