Great article on the issues with body positivity/health at any size as well as the concurrent problems with a fatphobic society https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/29/opinion/weight-loss-body-positivity.html …

I see Body Positivity as a great cause that has gone overboard in the pursuit of noble goals

No one should be shamed/stigmatized for being fat However, using this as an argument against obesity as a serious risk factor for chronic disease is problematic

This paragraph in the piece encapsulates the issue. There are a proportion of people for whom metabolic health is possible at any size. But that's no comfort for the people who do develop diabetes/CVD/COPD etcpic.twitter.com/ap8RMULmFe

I used to have a BMI of 35. I'm currently slightly overweight, and will probably always be higher than the *healthy* range I know what it is like to be discriminated against due to fatness, and it is really fucking horrible

But that doesn't mean that we should stop advocating for reductions in obesity. It is almost always better for your health to get to a *healthy* weight - not always, but most of the time

IMPORTANT ADDENDUM: people often present body acceptance as one of two choices - either you agree that weight has no impact on health, or you are fatphobic I do not agree

It is possible to try and reduce the stigma of obesity, promote acceptance of people who are not thin, and still accept that weight contributes to chronic disease

I think the key to a lot of this is linked to our relationship with food. I've done just about every diet there is and none has worked in the long-term. I am now trying not to think in terms of good foods and bad foods - it's all just food.
