Because in front of police brutality and repression, peaceful -n protesters only have the flag and their voices.

Today marks the 51st week of popular protests in for radical change and democracy. Two weeks to go for the one year anniversary of the protest movement and it shows no sign of exhaustion. Interesting and challenging days ahead in Algeria.

-n head of state, , is trying to consolidate his power in the face of what seems to be the resistance of certain "old guards" in the military institution. This disagreement will end in one of two ways: either he pushes certain generals to retire, or he'll resign.

The fact that the son of -n president is still in prison "provisionally" awaiting for his trial -which was supposed to take place few days ago but got postponed, again- strongly suggests a fracture w/in the system & a battle between different system circles.

Before any talk about encouraging foreign investment in , the country's political establishment must first consider the country's bureaucracy. Foreign investment requires an open, easy environment that doesn't ask for a dozen papers every two steps.

-n army magazine implicitly argues for continuous increasing defense spending to defend national sovereignty. Defense spending is one privilege the army will never give up in Algeria.

People talk about possibilities of investment in as a magical solution to the country's economic situation. I am far from being an investment expert, but I think it requires institutional stability. In Algeria, you have a reshuffling of high positions every few months.

-n President met with Foreign Minister who extended him King Salman's invitation to visit Saudi Arabia. The geopolitical competition in Algeria is increasing.

Anouar Rahmani, one of the youngest -n novelists and bloggers, will stand trial on Feb. 17. He is accused of "insulting a statutory body", very broad allegation/accusation that's been used to jail dozens of activists. This is sad, outrageous and depressing.

Small rectification: the stroke happened in 2013. But, indeed! hasn't witnessed such a diplomatic activity for years. Algeria's system is trying to 1/ gain international political legitimacy. 2/ get back to the international scene.

Foreign Minister, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, is in official visit to today. This visit was not announced previously if I am not mistaken.

The -s system is actively trying to gain legitimacy through some diplomatic maneuvering, esp. in . There's an intention to cover the internal political turmoil with a cosmetic diplomatic effort. Thing is: Algeria can't solve others' problems and ignore its own.

These prisoners were partisans/sympathizers with the -n banned Islamist party, the FIS. Following the dissolution of the party, authorities arrested around 160 people (other reports speak about higher numbers). Today, there are calls to shed light on these cases.

There's a lot of talk recently about -n political prisoners who were arrested and convicted for "terrorist acts" by ad-hoc military courts in the 90s. These courts were established following the famous 92 coup d'etat when the military junta canceled elections.

Interesting and confusing at the same time: -n Ministry of Justice criticizes certain ‘irrational’ judicial decisions that have no legal basis. What is exactly happening up at the state’s highest levels?

Africa is increasingly becoming a new field for geopolitical competition. This is especially true when one looks at investments and projects in Africa, including Chinese, Russian and recently American ones. However, the US stills seems hesitant compared to other powers.
