After our catastrophic failure in the 20th Century we Germans were taught by the US to develop strong democratic institutions. We also learnt that democracy is not just about institutions. It is about political culture, too. All democratic nations need to constantly defend it.

My father, born Magdeburg 1922, escaped to UK 1935, died age 98 in 2020, watched it happen there in the 1930s and here in the 2010s.

Well said. WIsh Germany will continue to defend democratic values around the world. The EU-China trade deal is an indication that profit is more important than values among the EU leadership.

And your country has been a delight to watch tbh. Democracy has been taken for granted for so many that it's become easy to underestimate the actions of a few people out to destabilize it. UK has its own threats right now.
