The radio-bubbles in the Galactic Center seen by (and shown here) are so im-frekin-pressive! Yet still small compared to the bubbles ()

Those students that worked with me got valuable experience observing or working overseas, and almost all are now in continuing positions in astronomy. This is how academic training and mentoring are supposed to work!

She backed the projects by getting the HIPASS team to send me catalogs as they were produced (we used them for sample selection), and by sending students (mostly) to staff observing runs and to work on producing the first science results.

Great to see Prof Rachel Webster , received an AO in the Australia Day Honours. She strongly backed two of my major science projects (the SINGG and SUNGG surveys) leading to the best science I've done. So thanks Rachel!

Nice paper by CHILES team on galaxy spin relative to the cosmic web . I wonder whether the minor axis vel gradients in the 2 dwarfs in their sample may be due to outflows rather than a polar ring.

And now you can get Fiona Audcent Ross's article on the radial distribution of SNe at the journal (MNRAS) web site:

1/ The first paper of my analysing HI spectral asymmetries in was accepted on Friday, and just came out in today's postings. You can check it out here: but stay tuned to this thread for deets:

Even summer interns can produce great science! (Although it is rare that it goes as well as it did in this story)

From Fiona-Audcent Ross on the rad. distrib. of supernovae: core-collapse SNe traced best with UV light, implying moderate mass progenitors; stripped envelope SNe traced best with H-alpha indicating more massive progenitors. w.

Nice video from / UWA, where I work, about undergraduate studies. It features two students I've had the privilege to work with: Madeleine () as a high school intern, and Adam () for his Masters

I want to compare these with maps of the UV color. NGC253 has been studied in over 1500 papers according to the ADS. I have looked through dozens of likely seeming papers, for optical E(B-V) maps, judging by titles. But so far no luck

Does anyone out there know where to find published reddening E(B-V) measurements for NGC253 (see pretty picture) from Balmer or other optical lines outside of the core region, preferably mapping the optical disk?

6/ So: outer disks may be more active than we thought, but not in making the most massive stars; the IMF is not universal.

5/ Previously, We found similar results for the outer disks of NGC2915 (ADS: 2015MNRAS.447..618B) and DDO154 (ADS: 2018MNRAS.477.5554W) .

4/ Our H-alpha observations are consistent with the main sequence luminosity function. No need for escaping ionizing photons!

3/ IMF models that fit the main sequence luminosity function have a low upper mass limit or steep power law stellar mass index (alpha).

2/ The luminosity function of main sequence stars lacks high luminosity stars compared to expectations for a Salpeter/Kroupa IMF.
