Our
#Geoscientists Steph and Jodie are halfway through their field trip in#Antarctica!
They have been hiking through some of the most remote parts of the world to collect samples and observations to understand how people impact ice-free environments in Vestfold Hills.pic.twitter.com/AhdEXU7Kx9

These
#FossilFriday specimens are of the extinct Australian species Dromornis planei, from the giant flightless bird family called the Dromornithidae, which lived 5-20 million years ago. Dubbed the “demon duck of doom”, Dromornis planei stood 2.5m tall!#Fossils#Palaeontologypic.twitter.com/fW95F7EClG

We’re celebrating the release of a Nature Communications publication on a hitherto unrecognised Archean rock series in the richly mineralised Kalgoorlie region, WA. The findings have implications for the timing of plate tectonics in the early earth. https://go.nature.com/2Z6fEhs pic.twitter.com/yZtjn5L1Ky

Let it glow! Fluorescence in minerals occurs under a specific wavelength of light which excites electrons in the mineral causing them to temporarily jump to a higher orbit in the atomic structure. They release energy when they return, causing colour change.
