It’s been a while since I posted (an excerpt) of my Victim Impact Statement, which I read out in front of Aitchison at his sentencing in the Canberra Supreme Court. My husband sat 5 feet away, a very good man beside for for 22 years.

Two years ago, I obtained 1,224 complaints of sexual abuse in immigration detention. Now thousands more complaints like those will be destroyed, many without ever having been investigated, wiping out a record that is a damning indictment of our immigration detention system.

Even when we jail our perpetrators, we are expected to protect those who covered up the abuse & enabled it. We are expected to accept insincere apologies from people who will continue protecting rapists. And we absorb what that says about our own worth & our place in society.

This thread is insightful, sensitively articulated & relevant to clergy abuse too. To date, I am forced to continue to protect the Catholic Bishop in my case. And others, one of whom includes a woman awarded a OAM years ago. Their lives will be celebrated. Mine will not.

Hate to sound like a broken record, but this always bears repeating - drive at sensible speeds at night & check the pouch of any marsupials you’re unfortunate enough to hit. Then move them off the road, or scavengers will run the risk of getting hit too It’s basic & saves lives

Chess is just the best. I used to jump on my bed aged 16 while singing along to my dog with my tape recorder. While wearing patterned Turkish pants. Total style icon.🤔😂

YES! This is merely a cynical way to limit their liabilities through a woefully inadequate scheme and pretend they have learned. Only dismantling the secrecy, sending all sheltered offenders to justice and a true openness going forward are acceptable, let alone praiseworthy

People like to claim you can't be funny without being offensive but my friend once looked at a packet of Tesco's chicken and said "60% chicken? I like those odds" and I'm still laughing sixteen years later.

True. I know so many people who applied in 2018. Institutions know that signing up is financially beneficial.

In the year I was on the Government Survivor Redress Roundtable, Morrison didn’t attend those three meetings. His Ministers were there for 30 minutes. That’s it. I’ve resigned my place because it’s lip service. It was made clear that I’m redundant there.

Don’t praise churches for ‘signing up’ to the Redress Scheme. Society/media should be asking, “And when will your onboarding process be completed?” Lay priests won’t know. Officials will dodge the question. They’ll gaslight you for asking. This is why they haven’t changed.

I sat on a Gvt Survivor focussed Redress Roundtable for a year. ‘Signing up’ to the Redress Scheme is barely more than a notice of intent. The ‘onboarding’ process is what has some integrity. Religious orgs promote sign up as some massive achievement. It’s just not.

Specificity of the instrument’s construction/engineering, anyone who knows anything about what a custom-made instrument like this means to a master like Sissoko realizes what a horrible affront this is *beyond* the racist security spectacle that is US Customs. Wow.

“I know him and I’ve never seen him be like that. He never acted like that with me.” Just because someone didn’t sexually assault you doesn’t mean they didn’t assault someone else.
