"I know that the #FTC will continue to do everything in its power to continue to respond to new technology and improve protections." But we're at a pivotal moment. All citizens, not just kids, need better privacy protections. -- Commisioner @RKSlaughterFTC #COPPAat20pic.twitter.com/rlidtqcgkY

How has #COPPA’s implementation evolved over the last 20 years to meet the issues raised by these new developments? What challenges does this new landscape present? First panel moderated by @paulohm is up. #COPPAat20

When #COPPA was enacted, smart phones and social media were not a reality. There has been a profound evolution of technology between 1998 and 2012. #COPPAat20. @paulohm @sarakloek @morganwreed @DigitalDemoc

We need to always be thinking about how #COPPA might prevent good products from reaching children and might prevent developers who do want to protect children's privacy from engaging with parents. - @morganwreed #COPPAat20

Since 2012, business practices and consumer expectations are the biggest changes to consider. We're looking at better privacy disclosures. There's more widespread interest in privacy. -- @sarakloek #COPPAat20

Growth in the advertising market for children has been huge: 25% growth per year. Parental consent is not enough. There needs to be regulations around the use of data, too. says @katharina__kopp of @DigitalDemoc at #COPPAat20

Ages 13-15 are a lot different than 12 & under. When I think about the actual way something could be implemented: we already have issues with getting consent from parents. Thinking of a meaningful way to get consent from teenagers is baffling to me @sarakloek #COPPAat20

.@paulohm doesn't buy the idea that verifying parental consent is "an unsolvable problem." If you can develop a checkbox that can order pizza, you can conquer a tool where a parent can verify what their child is doing online. If there was money to be made, it'd exist. #COPPAat20

20 years from now, it's hard to predict what tech will look like. But, we need to make sure that the FTC has adequate funds for enforcement and to provide guidance for businesses, parents, and other stakeholders. - @sarakloek #COPPAat20
