Bush and Blair plunged into Afghanistan without realistic aims, without an exit plan and with a mission that crept and mutated by the day. As many of us warned at the time, it was hard to see how it would end well. We were, as usual dismissed and reviled.

The outcome is catastrophic, but it has a horrible air of inevitability. Against the clanking certainties of the coalition's war machine and the need for a big, visible act of retribution, our warnings didn't stand a chance.

Beware of anyone with a simplistic military solution to a complex political predicament.

Realistic aims? Well, they saved the opium crop and once they secured it via their Drug Lord allies, most of it (70% or so) found its way on to UK streets. There was and remains a great deal of mineral and rare metal wealth too.

Just to be clear. It is simply not true that the Taliban were running the opium economy back then. Claims to the contrary remain nothing but propaganda. The truth of it was that the Taliban were wiping the crop and trade out on account of the fact it was haram.

It was astonishing how much of a matter of fact the invasion was taken to be at the time. "Of course we are going to invade them, what else are we supposed to do?"
