If Assange is successfully extradited and prosecuted by the US for performing this critical democratic service, journalists and whistleblowers everywhere should feel a chill wind blowing down their necks.

We can state this clearly, and strongly contest his extradition to the US, regardless of what we might think of his character, politics etc, or of the Swedish case. It's a matter of principle. If we don't stand up for his rights, we don't stand up for other people's.

He's there because he jumped bail for rape. How can you write this without once getting mentioning that? He's not a hero, he was a fugitive from justice. Won't you stand up for the principal that rape is wrong?
-
Of course. But that is a separate matter from extradition to the US.

Sadly, it *is* easy to forget for me, George. His doppelgänger keeps walking past my office window, smoking a cigarette.

Isn't it the crime of computer hacking that he'd be charged with, publication being protected under the First Amendment?

There are multiple charges. CPJ have characterised the publishing related ones as a threat to press freedomhttps://cpj.org/2019/05/julian-assange-charged-espionage-wikileaks.php …
