    Great thread on Sean Wilentz's "Ahab-like fascination" w/ 1619 project. The article itself is a visceral read. If you can get past his distortion of "historians" rising up against 1619 w/out nausea from his spin, all the books that Wilentz hasn't read cry out to you as he argues.

    Excellent thread. The UK need not have been committed to the abolition of slavery for US slave-holders to over-react in paranoid fashion to hints that their support might waver - witness David Brion Davis' classic book and so many examples throughout US history.

    So true. There are many more examples of this old fascist playbook of vicarious sadism. Remember Trump's love of Pershing's atrocities in the Philippines, to say nothing of his admiration of Duterte's death squads today.

    This is an incredibly disturbing, damning portrayal of Eddie Gallagher. It’s important to remember that Trump pardoned Gallagher, who murdered civilians and was described by fellow SEALS as evil, *because* he was sadistic, and Bc he *wants* his supporters to know this.
