When most people tell you they think words are so fascinating, they have in mind items like "canoodle" and "serendipity." When linguists say it, they have in mind, like, "the."

'the' actually is fascinating. It's incredibly difficult to explain the point of determiners, especially articles, to speakers of languages without them - such as Russian. You suddenly realise that they are sort of pointless and annoying (whilst also utterly indispensable!)
