People who cannot and indeed make no attempt to adequately explain their subject matter to a general audience are shocked, SHOCKED I say, when said audience wilfully misunderstands their subject in ways that any first year class would have belittled them for not understanding.

Btw, explaining to a general audience seems much more difficult than teaching first-year students. With students, you can go into details, and build up a bigger picture step by step. With general audience, you want to communicate the big picture quickly, without being misleading.

I agree! But conveniently I don't think people are actually good at explaining to first-year students either, they just rely on people they don't know how to teach dropping out, so I'm able to make the same criticisms regardless.
