I agree . My dad taught me about 'things men do' that were important, but must always be well leashed. You must be bold but not headstrong, proud but not arrogant, be stable but not cold, righteous anger but only when you must, ready to defend your loved ones but never a bully.
Hmm yes and such antihero-type characters are usually "redeemed" by overcoming these Bad traits, further enforcing them as Bad Wonder if redemption is even possible when the character has been set up to have the [Bad trait] problem as the conflict point

Yeah. I think also ends up with men defending a lot of awful men's behaviour - e.g. Linus Torvalds is also The Worst and people identify with him for much the same reasons they identify with Rick.
Is the dichotomy real? You can fuck with characters while only partially identifying with them, recognising bits of them while knowing the extremity portrayed is what's fucked up.
I mean it's not real in the sense that those are your only options. It does seem to be real in that a lot of men fall into one of these two camps.
