I do often find myself feeling that if people actually cared they'd care enough to be less incompetent in how they act on their supposed caring. I don't necessarily think this is actually true, I think people are just less competent than I want to believe, but it feels true.
it takes a lot of work to go against social consensus on "what to do" and most people are just lazy and delegate competence, which works when the delegates are effective
I wonder to what degree this is laziness and to what degree it's learned helplessness. I'm sure the answer is that it's both, I just don't know what the ratios are.
I think the root problem is actually not just that unfucking things is hard, it's also super depressing, because even if you do the hard work of unfucking things it mostly involves a long slog to achieve fairly modest change, and people don't rate that as worthwhile.
I find a lot of people only care inasmuch as they want others to think they care while taking absolutely no responsibility for unfucking anything, and so things stay fucked
