Honestly I think my take is just that men are bad at this and need a helping hand if we're going to salvage masculinity. To your specific point, there's a *lot* of stuff to protect people from that isn't just other men.
Partly in that men absolutely do not have a monopoly on violence - physical violence is disproportionately male, sure, but people need protecting from emotional abuse just as often and that's often from women too.

Also the protector role tends to be more generalised as handling emergencies - there's a problem, I'll sort it, etc.

I guess if men need help with this then I'm patient zero and in dire need. I'm coded all wrong to begin with and sick of feeling like I'm bad at my gender
