I think taking joking too seriously is also a faux pas, but it's one that I routinely fall prey to so I don't know how to explain the norms here very well.

Analogy off the top of my head: It's like dance battle. You do the best moves you can in the time you have, but hogging the floor signals low-status desperation/insecurity.

Yeah, but I think often it's not so much a battle as just a dance? Like it's your priority to come off as awesome, but it's even better if you *both* come off as awesome.
