76/ So my hope is that this thread might provide a framework for people who don't quite know how to address this issue when it occurs, and also to help people who don't realize they're doing it to see what they're doing. Patience, sympathy, kindness, and humility go a long way.

I think liminal is just saying that sometimes that escalation is where things are headed and sometimes not, and you have to be able to read it and/or that there's a way of participating in escalations like that that's performative and comes off poorly.

Yeah that's how I read it. Sometimes you bring it up to have a quick commiseration, and sometimes it can be like a 15 minute rant, but telling those two situations apart is an important social skill.
