FWIW my position on the subject is that it feels bad and dangerous but also sometimes the alternative feels worse. Haven't figured out how to navigate those situations yet.

this made me envision a hypothetical scenario in which 1: people are (rationally?) loathe to reveal their preferences, waiting for a subconscious signal that it is safe to do so 2: the signal is not just the raw count of people publicly professing a position, but the 1/?

RATE OF CHANGE in people publicly professing an opinion, such that preferences can shift in a COMPLETELY ARBITRARY WAY, because all of these rational actors are paying attention to different portions of the population, and so who publicly professes when is contingent on 2/?
