FWIW my position on the subject is that it feels bad and dangerous but also sometimes the alternative feels worse. Haven't figured out how to navigate those situations yet.

What if actually most people agree that it feels actively dangerous but are not willing to say that.
-
Hmm. I'd be surprised but honestly I can't rule it out.

I feel like most people intuitively feel like people should be able to say anything until they start noticing exceptions...
-
Yeah, that's probably true, but it's what they do when they notice the exceptions that seems to be decisive.

Somewhere there was an interesting thought that it could be harmless for the first generation who are aware of what we are doing and remember the reality but dangerous for the second generation who grow into the well-meaning lie without knowing it's make-believe.

I'm on the side of feeling it's dangerous, but I can see why others intuitively feel the opposite. Taboos on discussion are dry tinder - some people worry more about the dangers of letting it pile up, some people worry more about where the fire will spread.
-
Yeah, I agree, I totally get where people are coming from, but I'm still going to be in high alert in its presence.
