Also a lot of decisions don't warrant a tonne of effort and so you might as well pick at random and going with your gut feel is probably better than picking at random so you might as well.

I agree with this. A purely "rational" decision may not be rational, if it's ultimately the wrong decision for you. Like if you choose between two job offers because one looks better on paper is seemingly rational, then regret it because you really wanted the other job.
