I think for me it's more about familiarity with the man in question. Men I know reasonably well I don't have this with, total strangers I'm going to be hyperaware of it with.

I think I have a on-off switch according to body language, and then an amplitude switch according to familiarity. So with a familiar, dominant man, the felt risk becomes minuscule, but is still there.

I wonder how much of this is confidence in response. I'm not exactly a particularly competent fighter, but there's a certain baseline assumption that if the situation were to escalate in that direction with most men I could at least handle the situation non-disastrously.

So once the threat assessment drops below a particular level I can just go "eh, I'll worry about it if it comes up" and ignore the possibility.
