Kinda but what I'd actually like to be able to do in most of these cases is have an open and honest conversation about what actually does and doesn't work without people assuming that I thereby have an agenda

someone probably already did. people tend to acquire angry defensive reactions after having been throroughly stomped (shamed, or otherwise dominated) by someone at some point

Yeah, I know, but when you've got a political commitment against the thing that would actually be helpful, I'm still going to be frustrated. Especially when it's a thing that would also be helpful to me that is being blocked by someone else's defence mechanisms.
