I increasingly feel like online dating is a net harm to society.

I'm glad you agree that's inappropriate. I hear a lot of men say they "can't hit on women anywhere anymore!" if they're asked not to hit on women on the bus or grocery shopping or at work. So it's nice to have an easy response like "download Tinder".

I always found it odd that buses, shops etc. seemed like a good idea to anybody if they don't already know the person in question. People generally don't pop down to Tesco hoping to find a stranger to date.

I don’t remember before online dating existed but I remember before it got normal — and it did seem way more accepted then to hit on ppl doing normal everyday stuff like shopping, commuting, etc.

Fair enough. Well I'll acknowledge this is a positive aspect to having a well-understood place for single people to meet that I hadn't previously properly appreciated. I still think that online dating is a net negative, but ideally any replacement would also serve this function.
