I increasingly feel like online dating is a net harm to society.

It's been really nice for me for it to be okay for me to be like "don't hit on me!" in an increasing number of social situations, but I agree there's a cost to single people

I feel like this is attributable more to basic human decency than online dating. It's not like people don't still hit on people in person?

It feels easier to say "you're acting inappropriately, stop it!" now

Hmm. No, sorry, I don't get it. Hitting on people is in fact perfectly appropriate, and hitting on people after they've expressed a lack of interest was never appropriate, and I don't see how online dating changes the dynamic?

I'm confused. You've said that online dating has changed where and how you can't hit on people. Here you say what's appropriate hasn't changed, and I agree. But your initial post implies you understand that actually things *have* changed in practice?

I don't think people's behaviour has changed that much in events that aren't particularly about dating (parties, etc) although it probably changes how much people bother. I think online dating has made it much harder to have other events that are specifically about dating.

OH like speed dating or whatever? That's not what I thought you were talking about

Yeah, speed dating, more dedicated events, a bit more of just general old fashioned social networking ("I've got this friend..."). Maybe even entirely different online things that look completely different than the current online dating market.
