My family is the opposite if me politically, so frequently my gut feeling is "what the out group says". or opposite side, playing loose with terms.

Are you confusing gut feeling with inner desire? Many times people will do what the ingroup says, ignoring their gut feeling which tells them that it’s not the right (or moral) thing to do.
