Question for non-coercion Twitter: Is bravery a form of self-coercion, and if not what's the distinction? (This isn't meant as a gotcha, I actually want to know your answer)

IFS-framed answer: it's only not coercion if the part with the fear consents to being overruled. Like, in a work meeting, "disagree-and-commit" (if done well) would not be coercion. "disagree-and-overrule" would be, if that distinction makes sense? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disagree_and_commit …

To spell it out in more detail, the coercive version of courage would be something like: Part A: "we want this outcome" Part B: "but I'm afraid of X, Y and Z along the way" A: "well those fears are stupid and you're stupid. We're doing the thing" B: "...??!" (later) B: "aaaaaa"

The non-coercive version is more like A: "we want this outcome" B: "but I'm afraid of X, Y and Z" A: "tell me more about that?" <conversation of weighing pros against cons> B: "ok, you're right, that's really important. Let's do this. I'll let you drive this one though, A!"

I think potentially even the following could work, but requires lots of internal alignment/trust: A: "we want this outcome" B: "but I'm afraid of X, Y and Z" A: "this is really important and we don't have time. Go with me on this?" B: "ok onii-chan I trust you this time

...I guess how much you want to Existential Kink that internal relationship is up to the individual. There's an entirely plausible version of that internal dialogue that has "yes Sir" rather than "ok onii-chan"... Anything with B's informed consent is non-coercion in my book

I have very complicated feels about this being an internal *family* systems approach... But otherwise, this is very helpful, thank you!
