I'm attempting to acquire a more positive impression of coaching as a concept. Do you have any positive experiences with coaches, of whatever sort you'd like to tell me about?

Curious to see responses to this, given that I am a coach. Also curious why you may have a not positive impression of it.

I'm trying to figure this out myself. I think I've got a strong "coaching = snake oil" association that I don't necessarily officially endorse? Feels like 90% of coaches are charlatans and that I don't know how to figure out who the remaining 10% are?

I do coaching, & also have a huge aversion to that "snake oil" vibe. Had a lot of initial resistance to calling myself a coach, still get heebie-jeebies from "life coach". Has made it a lot harder to do the business side of coaching / put myself out there / connect with clients.

Same. I know a lot of coaches who have really struggled with the idea of calling themselves life coaches. But it also seems like going through the process of getting comfortable with it is also valuable.

Perhaps you need coaching coaches to help you get comfortable. This is both a good idea in principle and also it seems literally impossible to do this without feeling like you're selling snake oil, and therefore anyone who did it for real would be a snake oil salesperson.

I feel like, for you to believe your second point, you're misunderstanding what coaching is? Coaches are people like any other, who have their own challenges, blocks and ways of getting stuck. Most have coaches of their own, and that's a Good Thing.

Mostly it triggered my suspicion of pyramid schemes really hard TBH, like how people sell courses about how to sell courses online. I agree that just exploring these feelings with a coach is probably perfectly reasonable to do, but specialising in that feels like a red flag?

I suspect it's something that a professional coach would branch out into after a decent career in being a coach, and it would be just one part of a portfolio of services anyway.
