I haven't quite understood the underlying reasoning in my "Do I try to deescalate or do I press the block button?" decision making process but maybe this is somewhere where I benefit from being illegible anyway.

Questions I like to ask myself: - Does the person have a record of being reasonable/think for themselves? - Do they ever admit they were wrong? - Do they take time to think before responding? - Are they overly emotional? - Are they in a bad place and I *must* to be gentle?
These are all good questions! I think I take most of these into account, but my first pass filter is probably a less nice one, which is "Do I care about this person?"
