I guess to add to this: I put SSC in the same category as a lot of woo. He is worth reading and trying to extract value from, but the process is intrinsically a slightly adversarial one and taking him too seriously is worse than not reading him.

I think the "I'm also a social conservative" version of this is like... respectability politics? "Yes I am gay but look I too care about family values and want a respectable nuclear family marriage I'm only differing on this very narrow thing".

This is honestly a really interesting dynamic, though! Compare: I wouldn't say "I'm in favor of the broad 'families are good' sense of social conservativism" or "I'm in favor of the broad 'being kind to people is a good thing' sense of Christianity."

I have definitely heard people say things like "I'm not a Christian but I embrace Christian values" and "I'm not one of *those* gays, I just want a normal family". I agree it's far more common with feminism though yeah.
