A problem with intellectual Turing test style "you should be able to explain your opposition's position clearly in a way they'd agree with" tests is that generally 90% of your opposition can't explain their position clearly in a way someone on their side would agree with either.

Great example: Trump at the Town Hall was asked about Corporate Tax rates being low. He kept saying it brought companies here. While this may be true, it is a hard to measure stat. Far easier to understand, and what I wish he'd said, is the following

Seems like it's still valuable to be able to articulate varying levels of understanding. Recognizing that someone's probable justification is, "I see how COVID-19 isn't a big deal from Facebook" is something, if not very coherent.

Sure, it's a problem with it as a test, but that doesn't mean it's not a valuable thing to be able to do.
