What strikes me as offensive is the idea that the only defense of queerness is "it's not my fault, I didn't choose to be like this". Lots of people choose to explore their sexuality and find that their preferences change as a result. That's normal and healthy and good.https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1316223453570228225 …

Hard cosign. I'm extremely strongly of the opinion that there is a significant amount of (though certainly not total!) freedom of choice in both gender and sexuality, having exercised such choice myself, and I really resent discourse about it being all innate and immutable.

Come on guys. The reason that the limited mutability of sexual preferences has to be emphasized is because e.g., otherwise some people will send their 13 year old kid to conversion camp.

It doesn't seem to be working particularly well for getting people to not do that, and seems to be hurting a lot of people for whom their sexuality is an important part of their life, so I don't really feel like this is as convincing an argument as people treat it as.

The point that it's not effective is interesting. I don't know what the empirics are on that. It did seem like part of achieving gay rights was just waiting for homophobes to die.

I don't either. But my impression is that when you've got the left (in some broad nebulous sense) shouting something loudly and angrily, the people most likely to take it on board are the rest of the left, not the people on the other side.

And "sexuality is immutable and fixed" is a thing that fucks up a lot of queer people, and conversion camps sure seem to still exist and people still keep sending their kids to them, so I'm at least somewhat reluctant to take it on faith that we need this for politics reasons.
