I’ve also never met people this smart in real life so color me surprised when the very smart and very stupid turned out to be the same people. https://twitter.com/fullahchat/status/1315957768394858497 …

I think this is normal and just how being seen as smart/stupid works. Both are deviations from the norm, and errors in doing so will seem stupid, so you can't be seen as smart without also being willing to be seen as stupid.

Oh a lot of the smart people are VERY unwilling to be seen as stupid, if their replies/DMs to me are any indicator

Ha ha yes fair. "Willing" is maybe not the right word. It's more that if you're going to seem smart sometimes, you're also going to seem stupid sometimes, and the two can't really be separated because the same practices produce both.

I think it's possible (at least theoretically) to be very conformist in the way you live, while having distinctly above-average understanding of things. That way one would be "smart" and not "stupid" under the definitions that (I think) are implied in this discussion.

Maybe! But I bet almost everyone who is like that went through a period of seeming both smart and stupid in private first. It's very hard to learn a good understanding of something without making mistakes.

(Where "in private" = "with a small group of people" rather than all on their own)
