A lot of things you think of as bad are actually good if you accept one of three truths: 1. People are allowed to not be on your side. 2. Good things become bad when used to excess. 3. Good things may require effort, skill, and wisdom to use safely.

Additional reasons things might be Good Actually. 4. You're comparing them to a utopian scenario that isn't actually accessible and they're *way* better than the alternative. 5. "The Thing" is complicated and heterogenous and you're conflating good and bad versions of it.

ive found it very common that bad perceptions have a developmental origin, e.g. people not being praised or scolded correctly as a child. i run into heterogenity and idealism much more often with people who aren’t really asking for help or advice anyway

In the examples I was thinking of it it was more about groups of people who are painted as uniformly bad (that thought was prompted by current thread of discussion about 4chan, PUA, and gamergate, all of whom are More Complicated Than That)
