IIRC there's also some complicated history where the original gamergate guy (I forget his name) was friends with a bunch of people in the community, but I don't really know the story there I just have vague memories of there being something of that shape.
None of which is to suggest that those places don't deserve their reputations. I'm pretty sure they do. But I wouldn't necessarily conclude that because someone was a part of them in some sense that made them personally bad. Especially if it was when they were a lot younger.

(I don't necessarily endorse the claims of this article - some of it tracks the ways in which I was vaguely aware shit was complicated but I don't know about the rest)
