IIRC there's also some complicated history where the original gamergate guy (I forget his name) was friends with a bunch of people in the community, but I don't really know the story there I just have vague memories of there being something of that shape.

None of which is to suggest that those places don't deserve their reputations. I'm pretty sure they do. But I wouldn't necessarily conclude that because someone was a part of them in some sense that made them personally bad. Especially if it was when they were a lot younger.

I've heard people argue that Matthew Hussey effectively teaches women to be pick up artists in their own way and he seems pretty harmless - I wouldn't object an equivalent for menhttps://youtu.be/pg8Z0_N5KS8

I think part of what makes him less objectionable is he talks about relationships. Most PUAs have gone in this direction as well.

I've never been part of the PUA community, but Clarisse Thorn's book "Confessions of a Pickup Artist Chaser" is an interesting look at it: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13520189-confessions-of-a-pickup-artist-chaser?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=h3pQP2C5zk&rank=1 … Apparently the really awful people are there, but not representative of the whole community.

Interesting factoid: apparently most men who attend PUA training classes are there because they want to ask out one particular girl but don't know how or can't work up the nerve. After they've done that, most of them disappear.
