Decades ago, I once viewed an old interview where John Wooden (The Wizard of Westwood) noted that he never taught more than three new concepts in one setting because the human mind cannot remember more than three new things at a time.

I think it was presented as the maximum. But then again, I might be remembering incorrectly from 30 + years ago. It just struck me now how that rule of thumb has stayed with me.
