I got married at 24 and it's going pretty well! After two years of dating and some pre-marital counselling, how much more do you need to know before you decide if this is your person?https://twitter.com/jmrphy/status/1315040299278716928 …

Marriage is NOT for making you happy. A good marriage CAN make you happy, but that's not a guarantee or a requirement for staying married. Marriage guarantees you one extra person in your family (awesome!). They've often committed to some specifics like helping if you're sick.

based on 500+ patients general divorce/separation rate among cancer patients is ~11.6 percent 20.8 percent when the woman was sick versus 2.9 percent when the man was illhttps://www.reuters.com/article/us-partners-health-idUSTRE5AB0C520091112 …

I find this particularly depressing because getting cancer is so common as to be predictable. Like it's almost guaranteed that either my husband or myself will get some form of cancer eventually! smh

I have a hunch that a large fraction of those cases, the couple should probably have got divorced years previously but were sticking around out of inertia, and that the really depressing number in this statistic is actually how low the rate of women leaving is.

e.g. consider that 2.9% is lower than the rate of domestic violence.

(I'm not going to defend 20.8% as at all reasonable, and abandoning an otherwise good relationship because your partner gets cancer is obviously incredibly shitty, but some people really should get divorced and I have some sympathy for cancer being the "Nope, can't deal" moment)
