Equating "learning" with "reading a book" has seriously distorted expectations wrt the length of time it takes to become able to perform anything at a basic level.

yeah. books are an lossy way of transmitting information. it just happens that they scale much better than in-person trainings, so the civilisation switched to using them a lot. (workshops seem to be like the worst of both worlds)
