Rule of thumb: you are human, and therefore sometimes you are going to be a dick. Consider whether you would be able to recognise this when it happens. If you would not, something has gone wrong.

Stab it in its unfalsifiability. Often it will try to dodge and, to retain its grip on the host, claim predictions that can be tested in principle but not in practice. But a virtuous host usually can, with some help, muster enough cognitive dissonance to dislodge the theory.

(I'm deliberately misinterpreting your sentence as meaning that the *theory* never acknowledges it is at fault, by claiming to have explanations for everything and its opposite.)
