trick is to get good at turning dumb ideas into good ones.

very often, *trying* to come up with good ideas creates mediocrity, bc of subconscious pre-judgement try to come up with 1000 deliberately dumb ideas some of them will be brilliant, because the line between genius and stupid is thin, and you'll often cross it by accident

the challenge is to then recognize when your dumbness is brilliant, which can be hard because of The Hard Problem, which is managing your own psychology. It can be hard to admit that you can be smarter when you're trying to be dumb than when trying to be smart

I'd go so far as to say, almost everyone comes up with great ideas that they don't realize are great. I have a dentist friend who has fiction ideas better than 99% of my friends who are writers. but she will never write them because of The Hard Problem. That's how it is

people who make stuff, good to great, are all survivors of The Hard Problem. A lot of them even have survivor's guilt, because we can all think of someone who'd be better than us if they'd just show up and do the work
