"Why don't you just delete the (social media app) from your phone" is like asking "why don't you just skip your ingroup's invite-only party." It's a thing you could do, it's just not very smart.

I think I'm genuinely confused what people not on social media are doing with all their time. Surely not all reading virtuous and interesting long form things (though that's true of at least two people I know). More tv?

I used to spend less time on social media when I had irl friends who I could play games with and cook for and hug

Yeah. And also when I could maintain better focus. My reading has dropped through the floor in the last ~3 months and it's resulted in more time on social media. I'd like to spend less time on here, but it's more that I'd like to be able to spend more time doing other things.

Certainly the amount of time I want to be spending on here is not zero.

I think this particular corner of social media is quite different from what people experience as social media (doomscrolling, effort posting, fighting) but it's *still* the place where people's friends hang out!

somehow I manage to detach myself from all that (yeah I know it's immoral but can't help myself)

Probably not immoral? Depends on what you'd do with the information if you had it.

Yeah, this is where I've landed - I don't think there's any obligation to make yourself miserable consuming information you wouldn't have any way to use. I'm not sure what we *should* be doing but I don't think it's that.

We should be sitting down and considering all possible ways of spending our time and looking for the ones that best improve everything and then just doing that.
